Great gardeners of Sydney...Thomas Sutcliffe Mort, enbronzed by public subscription out of general affection and gratitude. On Bridge Street, then our main street of power, with Chief Secretary (=Premier)'s office, dept's of lands and education... And near Circular Quay's Wool auction rooms Mort ran with aplomb.
Best known for cracking a way to refrigerate meat, so Australia could export it, and his dry docks at Balmain and dairy estates at Bodalla on the South Coast.
I'd prefer he be celebrated as one of our great gardeners. His estate, Greenoaks at Darling Point was celebrated as our finest in its 1850s-90s heyday. He employed landscape designer Michael Guilfoyle (who lifted its lustre, later leasing land of Mort's in Double Bay and running his 'Exotic Nursery', a leading institution.
His son William went on to fame for Melbourne Botanic Garden. But absorbed it all in Sydney and northern NSW /Qld.rainforests first. Not bad!
